This week Softduit Media is working with graphic designer Jennifer Slagle in Urbandale, Iowa (near Des Moines, IA) to migrate her website from a static Apple MobileMe platform to a WordPress as a CMS (content management system) setup.

Jennifer runs the graphic design firm, Design 26. She has an extensive portfolio of graphic design work for customers in Iowa and the midwest. Her former website successfully incorporated examples of her portfolio, but the site lacked the flexibility of a CMS in both communicating with potential and existing clients as well as simply attaining decent listings and rankings through the primary search engines....

I’ve been covering Dragon Naturally Speaking from Nuance for a long time but have not seen the prices this low before.

Right now you can buy Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 for $29.99! For your average user, that’s all you need! If you want to have the extra ability to utilize an MP3 voice recorder (I use a Sony) you can get the Preferred version for as low as $117.99 and the ‘wireless’ version for $155 (that’s bluetooth wireless, I personally use an after market 2.6ghz wireless logitech headset that will work with any version).

You could buy the basic version for $30 and an $90 logitech clearchat wireless headset for a total price of $120 or just jump to Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 bluetooth wireless at $155.

No matter what these are great prices. Typically the lowest prices you will se are about $80 for Basic, $150 for preferred and $250 for bluetooth wireless. The best part about this is that at $30 for Basic, this is a great price for a first time user to get in and see just how great this software is these days.

This week we are kicking off two more Labs on the Lake. This week we will hold two labs. One today, Monday(5-18 at 2pm est), covering the topic of Blog Monetization, walking through some blog revenue sources, adding some new ones to the list and giving some advice on how to navigate these options which can be murky on a good day. This like many of our topics will be covered several times. Blog Monetization is definitely not something that can be covered in a single day, let alone a single lab. Many people are looking for ways to earn extra money, raise revenue to market their companies more, or even start their own business. We will help people get started with the process of making money with a blog (a blog is required to follow along with this lab in person or on our live show at Mogulus.com/wificove ).

Then on Thursday(5/21 2 pm est) we are going to cover the topic of building traffic through networking. [Meetup RSVP link]

Again this is a very deep topic and one we will revisit many times in the future, but you can tune into either lab at 2 PM est or if you are in the Charlotte area, RSVP through our Meetup group (cost $5 to attend) and spend an afternoon on the lake learning some great web skills that will make you money.

We are following up on our first Lab on the Lake last week, which covered WordPress Installation, WordPress Configuration, & WordPress Theme design with our favorite WordPress Theme Generator-Artisteer. The video from this event (our first live broadcast) didn’t take to well, but we got the bugs worked out the next night when we held our weekly WordPress Meetup in Charlotte and do expect this weeks events to go off without a hitch.

The Obama Administration firmly believes that economic recovery will be driven in large part by America's small businesses, which have generated about 70 percent of net new jobs annually over the past decade. But as the flow of credit has dried up during this recession, small business owners who were prudent and responsible have been set back by the behavior of others in our financial system who were not. Businesses with strong credit histories have seen loan applications denied due to conditions that have nothing to do with their own actions and are now struggling to expand their businesses, make their payments or even keep workers on their payrolls. As a result, while the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) typically guarantees about $20 billion in loans annually, new lending is trending below $10 billion this year.

The Obama Administration has already taken several positive steps to ensure that small businesses have access to the credit they need to support an economic recovery. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed by the President provides for increased guarantees and reduced fees for certain Small Business Administration loans. In February, the Treasury Department made a special effort under the Consumer and Business Lending Initiative to improve terms for securities backed by SBA loans in the TALF.
Today, as part of an effort Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner first outlined in introducing the Financial Stability Plan (FSP) in February, we are taking immediate action to help ensure that credit – the lifeblood of America's small businesses and its economy – gets flowing again to entrepreneurs and business owners. As another part of the Consumer and Business Lending Initiative, the Treasury Department will – by the end of the month – begin making direct purchases of securities backed by SBA loans to get the credit market moving again, and it will stand ready to purchase new securities to ensure that community banks and credit unions feel confident in extending new loans to local businesses. These purchases, combined with higher loan guarantees and reduced fees, will help provide lenders with the confidence that they need to extend credit, knowing they both have a backstop against their risk and a source of liquidity. These measures will complement other steps the Administration is taking to help small businesses recover and grow, including several tax cuts under the Recovery Act.

Begin Direct Purchases of Securities Backed by Loans from SBA's 7(a) Program: Traditionally, SBA lending has been supported by an active secondary market, as community banks and other lenders sell the government-guaranteed portion of their loans, providing them with new capital to make additional loans. But since last fall, this secondary market – which has historically supported over 40 percent of SBA's 7(a) lending program – has frozen up. As a result, both lenders, including community banks and credit unions, and the "pool assemblers" that securitize their loans have been left with government-guaranteed SBA loans and securities on their books. This has prevented them from making or buying new loans.Today, the Treasury Department announces that – in order to get credit moving immediately to small businesses – it will:

Stand Ready to Purchase Securities Backed by 7(a) Loans Packaged Since Last July: Treasury has hired an investment manager who will be authorized to purchase – starting by the end of this month – securities backed by guaranteed portions of 7(a) loans packaged on or after July 1, 2008. This will help clear the backlog of securities that has built up since the beginning of the credit crisis last year, providing pool assemblers and banks with a source of liquidity so that new lending can occur.

Stand Ready to Purchase New 7(a) Securities Packaged Between Now and the End of the Year: Between now and the expiration of Emergency Economic Stabilization Act (EESA) authority on December 31, 2009, Treasury stands ready to purchase new securities backed by the guaranteed portions of 7(a) loans. By making this pledge, Treasury provides assurances to community banks and other lenders that they can sell the new 7(a) loans they make, providing them with cash they can use to extend even more credit.

Make Direct Purchases to Unlock Credit Markets for SBA's 504 Community Development Loan Program: The SBA's 504 program combines government-backed loans with mortgage loans from private lenders to provide long-term financing of up to $10 million that directly supports economic development within a community. First-lien mortgage loans made by private-sector lenders – which account for 50 percent of the financing for 504 projects, and are not SBA guaranteed – were often traded in the past on an active secondary market that has frozen in the last year, leaving billions in unsold assets on the books of banks. To get the 504 lending market moving again, Treasury will:

Stand Ready to Purchase Securities Packaged From 504 First-Lien Mortgages: Treasury will stand ready to buy first-lien mortgage securities connected to SBA's 504 loan program. No later than May, Treasury will begin purchasing securities packaged on or after July 1, 2008 that meet eligibility criteria designed to protect taxpayers.

Prepare to Buy 504 First-Lien Mortgage Securities That Receive New SBA Guarantees: As part of the Recovery Act, SBA is working to develop a secondary market guarantee program for securities issued from pooled 504 first mortgage loans. Once this program is fully implemented by SBA, Treasury will stand ready to purchase these government-guaranteed securities.

Provide Liquidity While Keeping The Secondary Market in Place: These direct purchases of 7(a) and 504 securities will provide liquidity to lenders, including community banks and credit unions, enabling them to restart the process of recycling capital and extending loans. At the same time, the TALF component of the Consumer and Business Lending Initiative will provide investors with an attractive source of financing, allowing them to continue participating in the market. This is intended to keep the existing secondary market in place so that private investors can replace the government as the purchaser of these securities when market conditions return to normal.

Temporarily Raise Guarantees to Up to 90 Percent in SBA's 7(a) Loan Program: The purpose of the 7(a) loan program is to provide a government guarantee that reduces the risk lenders face when they make loans to borrowers who cannot find credit elsewhere. But during the current recession, the guarantees – up to 85 percent for loans at or below $150,000 and up to 75 percent for larger loans – have not been large enough to give banks the confidence they need to lend. As part of its implementation of the Recovery Act, the SBA today announces:

An Increase in Maximum Loan Guarantees to 90 Percent: Beginning today, any lender who participates in the 7(a) program can request a guarantee from the SBA of up to 90 percent for each eligible loan. This temporarily available increase in guarantees will help provide banks with the greater confidence they need to extend credit during the current recession.

A Confidence Boost Lenders Need to Extend Credit: Combined with Treasury's efforts to unlock secondary markets, higher loan guarantees will ensure that lenders have both greater safeguards against possible credit losses and assurances that there will be an active secondary market to purchase their loans and provide the liquidity they need to keep lending.

Temporarily Eliminate SBA Loan Fees to Reduce the Cost of Capital

Elimination of Borrower and Lender Fees for 504 Loans: On any new eligible 504 applications submitted beginning today, SBA will temporarily eliminate the Certified Development Company (CDC) processing fees charged to borrowers and the third-party participation fees charged to lenders. As a temporary provision authorized by the Recovery Act, these measures will reduce costs to both borrowers and lenders participating in the 504 program, which has a demonstrated record of supporting community development and creating jobs.

Elimination of Up-Front Fees for 7(a) Loans: For any new eligible 7(a) loan, the SBA will temporarily eliminate the up-front fees that lenders pass along to borrowers. These fees – which go up to 3.75 percent for larger loans – increase the cost of borrowing for small businesses and make it more difficult for them to access the credit they need to expand or make new investments.

Rebates for Fees Paid Since February 17th: For borrowers or lenders charged any of these fees on loans approved on or after February 17th, the SBA will provide a refund, to ensure that Recovery Act provisions create the maximum possible economic stimulus.

A Pledge to Quickly Turn Around Loans: To maintain a high level of service to potential borrowers and lenders alike, the SBA also pledges that complete loan applications will be turned around quickly by the SBA – usually in as little as two to three days.

Call by Secretary Geithner for New Reporting Requirements on Bank Lending to Small Businesses and Greater Efforts to Extend Small Business Loans

Require the 21 Largest Banks Receiving Financial Stability Plan Assistance to Report Their Small Business Lending Every Month: As part of the President's commitment to increasing transparency and accountability, Treasury will – for the first time – require the 21 largest banks receiving capital from the government to report how much small business lending they do every month.

Call for Quarterly Reports of Small Business Lending By All Banks: Today, Secretary Geithner called for every bank nationwide to report their total lending to small businesses in their regular quarterly reports, rather than just once a year. Secretary Geithner will ask bank regulators to take steps to amend the quarterly Report of Condition to achieve this important objective. This will offer more current information about trends in small business lending, while at the same time providing important information about how well government programs are working to stimulate these loans.

Issue Call for All Banks to Make Efforts to Increase Small Business Lending: Today, Secretary Geithner called on all banks – whether or not they receive FSP assistance – to make an extra effort to extend small business loans to creditworthy borrowers. In light of the extraordinary assistance provided to the banking system, Secretary Geithner emphasized that lenders should take a special responsibility for providing the credit that small businesses need to operate, expand and add jobs.

Issue Guidance for An Expanded Carryback Provision as Part of the Recovery Act's Comprehensive Tax Cut Package for Small Businesses:

Establish Five-Year Carryback Provision to Increase Tax Refunds for Small Businesses:Today, the IRS will issue guidance for a provision in the Recovery Act that allows businesses with gross receipts of up to $15 million to "carry back" their losses for up to five years, effectively allowing them a rebate on taxes paid in previous years. The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that this measure will increase liquidity for small businesses by $4.7 billion by September 30, 2009.

Continue Implementation of Recovery Act's Comprehensive Tax Cut Package for Small Businesses: The carryback provision is only one of several measures in the Recovery Act that will improve liquidity for small businesses by lowering their taxes, including:

Incentives to Invest in Plant and Equipment by Allowing Small Businesses to Write Off Up to $250,000 of Investment: The Recovery Act allows small businesses to immediately write off up to $250,000 of qualified investment in 2009, providing an immediate tax incentive to invest and create jobs.

Additional Liquidity Support By Reducing Estimated Tax Payments: Normally, small businesses have to pay 110 percent of their previous year's taxes in estimated taxes. But with incomes down for many small businesses this requirement is too burdensome – and causing a cash crunch. The Recovery Act allows small businesses to reduce their estimated payments to 90 percent of the previous year's taxes, helping to boost their liquidity and better align their estimated taxes with their actual taxes in a year of severe economic contraction.

Extension of Bonus Depreciation Deductions Through 2009: The Recovery Act also extends through 2009 bonus depreciation,allowing businesses to take a larger tax deduction within the first year of a property's purchase.

Incentives for Investors to Put Money in Small Businesses: Finally, the Recovery Act includes a measure that will exclude from taxation 75 percent of the capital gains for investors in small businesses who hold their investments for five years. In his budget, the President proposes to go further, eliminating all capital gains taxes on small businesses and making this measure permanent.

Toyota Cuts Outlook

Like so many other businesses, Toyota announced that they will need to cut their groups operating outlook due to their first ever annual operating loss. The loss is a result of the crippling worldwide economic downturn. The cut comes half a dozen weeks after chief rival Honda announced a cut to their outlook as well as again a week or so later when they cut once again.

"This is very, very, very bad," said Koichi Ogawa, chief portfolio manager at Daiwa SB Investments. "There's a chance they could fall into the red in the next business year as well.

"This is also not just a problem for Toyota. What is good for Toyota is good for the Japanese economy."

Currently automakers across the world are attempting to deal with a number of crisis' stemming from the global recession and are coming out thiner than expected. In addition to Toyota's operating issues we are well aware of Detroit's big-three's woes and the effect they are having on an already down economy. Many of the large car companies are making cuts on a number of levels including executive benefits and perks as well as cutting contributions and sponsorships.

It will be interesting to see where the auto-makers find themselves in the upcoming quarter as as well as spring 09'. I will also be curious to see where the United States Congress will come in regarding an economic bail-out in the form of a bridge loan. Only time will tell.

Trade Show Booths

Having spoken briefly about a number of businesses that have been reshuffling and making drastic cuts, I wanted to change things up a bit today and talk about tools that many businesses are utilizing in order to accelerate their growth potential during these troubling economic times. Lately a growing number of small and large businesses are utilizing trade shows as a positive avenue for business development and growth. Although there are a wide variety of trade shows for an even wider variety of businesses and fields, there are a few things that remain homogenous and that is the need for those businesses to have trade show booths.

You might not realize it, but there is actually quite a bit involved in regards to selecting a trade show booth that will not only showcase your business, but deliver an air of professionalism. I remember visiting a trade show for new media in Boston, MA a few years ago and passing the "booths" by that were merely card tables with a tablecloth and poorly crafter banner. I mean, how can you try to sell someone your service from a "booth" like that? I suppose they may have had their reasons, but it must have been embarrassing watching a steady stream of convention goers walking right passed your booth all weekend long.

In regards to what makes a positive impression on trade show attendees might vary depending on the venue, but you can rest assured having banner stands and a Pipe and Drape display is probably a good start. Oh and do yourself and your business a favor and don't just run out to the party store to grab a cheap table skirt, take your time and find one that matches and is of good quality. If you are planning on renting out booth space at a trade show or convention, be sure to get together with the venue and learn more about their accommodations. Who knows, if you perform well you might be heading in the opposite direction as everyone else during economic upheaval.

Fed/Ex Makes News Again

Sometimes I feel like this blog should be called "Fed/Ex Distribution Business News" due to the fact that I am constantly reporting about Fed/Ex and their cutbacks and whatnot. Well, here we are again as the package delivery giant announced a 20% pay cut for CEO Fred Smith in addition to the suspension of their retirement plan contributions company-wide. The news comes in response to the bleak economic climate.

"Our financial performance is increasingly being challenged by some of the worst economic conditions in the company's 35-year operating history," Smith said in a statement.

"It's tough, but it's a sign of the times," Al Meyers, portfolio manager of the AHA Diversified Equity Fund, which owns FedEx shares, said of the pay cuts. "The fact that executives including Fred Smith are taking pay cuts sends a message to employees that 'we're all in the same boat,' which is a positive."

Not only has Fed?Ex taken a hit with the financial crisis in full swing. UPS has seen overall volume declines as well as reduced share value on the NYSE index. The current economic slowdown that became a full blown recession is impacting the nation much like that sucking sound you here in the bathtub when you pull the stopper. The only question I have is when is somebody going to put the stopper back in instead of just running more water.

Save Time Document Scanning

Due to the Sarbanes-Oxley mandates it is now more important than ever to maintain accurate and organized records (unless you want to incur heavy fines and possibly lose your business). Having said that, many organizations of all sizes are changing the way that they keep records. Having worked in medical records while living in New Hampshire, I am quite familiar with the process in which records are swapped from cumbersome files into a database via document scanning.

There are a number of organizations that specialize in the business or electronic records as well as document scanning, but there is one that stand head and shoulders above the rest; RecordNations. As I mentioned earlier, whether you are a small business or a fortune 500 company, Sarbanes-Oxley as well as general tidiness have undoubtedly forced your hand into moving further into the digital age (at least with records). Fed/Ex Share Drop

The current economic crisis is really beginning to wear on shipping companies nationwide, and the good folks at Fed/Ex are rally beginning to see there share value dropping to the tune of 11% as of the end of last week. In addition to shares dropping 11%, Fed/Ex also just slashed their projected financial outlook for the next calender year. On December 18th Fed/Ex is expected to deliver their actual '09 outlook and it doesn't look too pretty.

"Fedex also sharply lowered its previously announced fiscal 2009 earnings forecast, to a range of $3.50 to $4.75 per share, from $4.75 to $5.25, as "significantly weaker macroeconomic conditions are expected to offset the benefits from lower fuel prices and the announced departure of DHL from the U.S. domestic package market."

In addition to this glum forecast by Fed/Ex, UPS has also had similar issues during this crisis and it will be interesting to see just how far down the rabbit hole we wind up. I suspect that we are only seeing the beginning of this and that things will likely get worse after the holiday season due to the fact that folks wont be sending as much freight and packages via the two carriers.

Supply Chain Mystery to CEO's

I just read an article that blew my mind! Would you believe that nearly 47% of global businesses surveyed claimed that they need to pay more attention to their supply chain. Apparently 350 Senior Executives were surveyed and the results of these surveys are truly perplexing. In addition to the aforementioned numbers, 16% said that they paid an adequate amount of attention to their supply chain while a whopping 10% said they don't pay any attention at all!

"While 38 percent of companies did rate their supply chain as resilient, a more worrying 42 percent stated that their ability to manage risk had been outpaced by the expansion of their global supply chains.

According to the survey, while many companies knew the risks of supply chain, and the benefits to making sure their chain is resilient and well-managed, many glossed over this in their day-to-day operations. Nearly half of the companies only measured risk assessment annually.

“Businesses appear to be increasingly vulnerable to supply-chain disruptions that can have a catastrophic impact on business performance,” said Dan Brutto, president of UPS International."

Having worked in various shipping warehouses and other aspects within the supply chain, I have found that oftentimes the left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing. It is interesting to see that due to the growth of these businesses on a global scale that they are unable to manage their newer/larger supply chain with a hands on approach.

I've been reading a lot of articles in the paper and online regarding different techniques people are using in order to protect their valuables during this uncertain economic time. I was fascinated to find that not only safe's are being purchased in record numbers, but also police gear and weapons etc. In addition to all the tactical gear people are scooping up, home alarm systems and the like are being purchased nationwide. I'm not too sure what people are thinking is going to happen out "there", but it might not be too bad to be prepared for anything that might happen.

After looking at a couple of websites, I found that the LA Police Gear website had some pretty interesting items for individuals and businesses alike. CP Rail Hit by Recession

Canadian Pacific Rail has announced that they will be forced to cut 600 union jobs in order to better weather the current economic recession. The Calgary, AB company currently has a workforce of 16,000, but of course, due to the cuts payroll will be lighter in the upcoming quarter. In addition to trimming nearly a thousand jobs, corporate executives will also be restricting air travel on corporate jets as well as doing away with different corporate benefits.

In the message to staff, Chief Executive Fred Green said the "coming months will not be easy ones." He said his goal is to get the "franchise back on track" by focusing on "containing costs on all fronts, in tough ways," the newspaper reported, noting Green held a town hall meeting with staff on Tuesday.

Up until this point, rail appeared to be "weathering" the financial storm quite well in comparison to other industries. It will be interesting to see where things go from here for unions in general as well as alternative freight options.

UAL Corp to Cut 1,200

The dismal economy has hit many industries very hard over the last year or so and folks in the airline industry are on the front lines once again. After so many years of restructuring and insolvency, UAL (the parent company o United Airlines) has announced that they will be eliminating 1,200 workers in an attempt to cut nearly 7,000 jobs through 2009. When the cuts were first announced late in November, UAL employed well over 55,000. After the projected cuts, UAL is expected to be able to run partial staff in order to meet current economic conditions head on.

Apparently after being battered by high fuel costs and persistent maintenance issues, the airline industry decided to downsize in order to stave off insolvency. It is unclear whether or not the current economic crisis will require UAL to make deeper cuts, but at the moment fuel prices (which are at their 1998 levels) can't be labeled the culprit, at least not yet.

It will be interesting to see how the holiday travel season plays out for this industry. It is clear that a lot of people aren't traveling this year due to economic concerns as well as ticket prices. I suspect that more cuts will be on the way for the 09-10 calender year.

Big Three Bailout Cont.

Today the United States Congress send a draft to the White house regarding a roughly 15$ billion dollar bailout for the automakers. It is unclear what will happen at this point with the draft, but I expect (with proper oversight) that a deal will be in place in the coming weeks to stave of more job looses as well as a further plummeting of the nations fragile "fiscal morale".

In regards to congress, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) went on the record to say that he was not pleased with loaning taxpayer money to these companies, but followed by saying that it must be done.

There have been numerous polls conducted and America, it would seem, would prefer the big 3 to file bankruptcy. I'm not too sure that would be a bad thing. Granted, if you are working for the big 3 that might not be so great, but there are a lot of industries in trouble and I'd hate to see them all start flooding to DC for a handout.

This is a slippery slope and will lead us to ruin if we let it get out of control. As this story is developing, there will likely be new news in the coming days, so we'll see where we end up on Tuesday.

Auto-Bailout Pleas

The big-three American automakers will be back in front of congress today to deliver their plea (plan) for a bridge loan to keep their businesses afloat until the next quarter. The three have put up a lot of window-dressing to try and sway public opinion, but it is unclear as to whether or not $1 dollar salaries and selling private jets are likely to sway the United States Congress. Regardless, the automakers are going to deliver their proposal this afternoon.

In addition to offering up that proposal, the big three have upped the ante to 34 billion dollars from the "meager" 25 billion they requested about a month ago. Whether this congress accepts the proposal and opens up the checkbook, undoubtedly the automakers will return to the table after Jan. 2oth when the new president and congress are sworn in. Besides, third times a charm.

It will be interesting to see how well they are received when they arrive on capitol hill. This time instead of flying in on private jets they will be arriving via motorcade of hybrid vehicles. Honestly, I think everyone is tired of all this window-dressing. We've been through all this and just want a game plan for viability.

CEO of Ford to Earn $1 Salary

For those of us who can't get enough of the ongoing auto-industry bailout drama, today the CEO of Ford promised to lower his annual salary to $1 in order to secure a 25 Billion dollar bridge loan to secure the business. The announcement comes mere weeks after the big three automakers CEO's arrived in Washington, DC for a hearing via individual private jets that cost an estimated 50K apiece. Apparently arriving hat in hand looking for a handout via private jet is the type of behavior that will get one laughed at even in that town.

In addition to the Ford CEO's salary pledge, he continues to claim that the company will sell its five private jets and attempt to cut United Auto Workers Union labor costs as well as other belt tightening activities. Honestly, it is about time that Ford decided to develop a comprehensive plan to submit to congress. Personally, I think that the union has had Ford and Michigan legislators over the barrel for years and is finally about to reap what they have sewn. I come from a union family and I have to say that the UAW has been raping and pillaging the auto industry forever. I mean, 60K a year to work the assembly line, that is ridiculous!

Class warrior aside, it will be interesting to follow this story as things develop in the coming days. I don't expect to see any handouts the rest of the year. I believe it will be up to the 11th congress and President-Elect Obama.

Changing Industries

Due to the current financial crisis, many people are losing their jobs and many industries are distressed. Fortunately there are still a lot of options for job seekers and those who are looking to move into other industries. More often than not, it is essential to have a degree in most entry level positions as well as some form of experience in order to attain a position. Luckily, there are a lot of affordable and comprehensive training schools and institutions all around the country for those interested in moving into the culinary and hospitality services fields.

Believe it or not, many people have been moving into the airline industry despite its recent tumultuous nature. Flight attendant school as well as other hospitality institutions have been seeing record enrollment. In addition to the record enrollment, there has been an increasing amount of graduates moving into the industry all across the nation despite the economic slump.

I have to admit that I really enjoy flying and I couldn't think of a more geographically interesting industry to be in. Business Closings

Earlier today I wrote an article regarding all of the businesses that had announced various closings all across the United States, but neglected to stress the impact this would have on the economy as a whole. I have spent some time thinking about the impact of all those store closings. Granted, some of the stores that are shutting down are small and will likely only release 20-30 people into the ranks of the unemployed, but some of the retail establishments that I mentioned employ hundreds and could be devastating to small cities and towns across the nation.

I recently moved from Manchester, NH to Austin, TX. When I was living in Manchester I worked at a party supply store on South Willow St. as an assistant manager. While working on that street I took some time and got to know a lot of the employees of all the stores that surrounded mine and came to realize that many of those stores would likely go out of business if the nation headed further into recession. Unfortunately, shortly after I received that email I mentioned in the article earlier today, I was contacted by a former coworker who told me that nearly every plaza on the street had 2-3 businesses that would be out of business by the new year.

In addition to that awful news, my mother in-law just told my wife and I that the Mall of New Hampshire also had a number of stores closing including The Gap, JC Penney, KB Toys and a number of others. As I mentioned earlier, the closings aren't due to a poor business model or bad management decisions. The stores are closing due to the fact that consumers are getting pinched from al sides and don't know whether they will have a job in the near future. You cannot blame anyone for holding onto their money in times like this. I will be interested to see if the banks begin lending again in the near future so that the economy can hiccup its way along. I suspect we are just getting into the beginning of our woes here. It will be "interesting: to see just where things go in 2009.

There is little to no doubt that you have received a comprehensive listing of all of the retail establishments that are being forced to close their doors due to the current economic recession our nation is engulfed in. The above list was just some of the big named stores that are closing their doors between now and January! As I mentioned before, having worked in retail management for a number of years I think I can say that this is not good for anybody. Not only will a number of businesses on Main St. be going under, but a lot of quality people will be out of work for the new year. These businesses are not guilty of poor business models or anything in that regard. They are instead victims of the crisis that has started on Wall St. and are likely not to be given any assistance by Washington. It is upsetting to see so many jobs lost between now and January and what is more upsetting is the fact that this information is nowhere to be found on the network news.

Auto Manufacturers No Bailout?

Ford, Chrysler and GM may not be in the auto manufacturing business for much longer, especially if they aren't the beneficiary of a supplemental government bailout plan congress has been squabbling over for the last week or so. Some may argue that the industry "leaders" who have been in financial trouble for almost my entire life are too "American" to be allowed to fail. Honestly, whether something is done or not, I highly doubt they will be able to compete due to their bowing down to unions and excessive pension plan payouts. Don't get me wrong, I am a supporter of unions and workers rights, but when you are running a huge corporation you need to be able to stand up to those unions to keep yourself in business.

This morning, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson told congress that the 700 Billion dollar bailout plan is not intended to help individual businesses that are not involved in the banking crisis. My thoughts are that they aren't in Paulson's little Goldman Sachs circle so they will not be bailed out. In my opinion, this whole thing stinks. I do agree that the bailout money should be used as prescribed, but when Paulson continues to change the prescription from day to day of course failing businesses and industries will be looking for a handout. This whole thing has been handled so sloppily that it keeps snow-balling into a bigger fiasco by the hour.

It is unclear whether or not President Bush and his administration will allow supplemental money for the auto industry during his last days in office. With the squabbling continuing on the hill between democrats and republicans the auto-makers will likely declare bankruptcy before any decision or legislation is crafted.

U.S. Blocks Chinese Milk Products FDA Puts Burden on Importers

The US and the FDA are showing their ineffectuality both in their 100% ban and in pushing the burden not on their own regulators and testers that are too under staffed to make a difference, but to importers of record.

Federal food safety officials yesterday began holding up shipments of food from China that contain milk or milk-derived ingredients in the largest effort to date to keep products tainted with the industrial chemical melamine from reaching U.S. consumers.

The Food and Drug Administration is requiring importers of the halted shipments to test for the chemical, which is used to make plastic and fertilizer but has been added to human and animal food to boost protein readings. The types of products likely to be waylaid are cookies, candies, and other goods made with milk or milk powder.

If an importer can prove his product is not tainted, FDA will release it, said Steve Solomon, the agency's deputy associate commissioner for compliance and policy. The agency also will step up its testing of products already on the market.

U.S. Blocks Chinese Milk Products

The obvious flaw in this action is that there will still be some importers that will route these products through other countries and use false information, documentation or whatever it takes to move their goods, defective or not.

This may block the easy items, but the hard work has yet to be done.

Unemployment Summary Nov. 08

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics released the "Unemployment Situation Summary" this morning and the results were anything but good. Unemployment has risen .4% from 6.1% to 6.5% while payroll employment shed 240,000. The complete summary can be found here.

This is quite alarming and does not show any signs of letting up. It seems as though the federal government is trying to throw everything that they have at the situation and the best that can be done is to slow the decline. Granted, we all expect them to do something, it is just a matter of time before they run out of stuff to throw at this thing. I mean, the Federal Reserve has dropped rates to the point where they are almost out of points to shave. In addition to that, I find that the point drops only stave off the decline for a month or so. I also think that a second stimulus is going to do little to nothing to remedy the situation due to the fact that the first stimulus did little to nothing. I don't know about you, but I just used mine to pay some bills. I don't know anyone who rushed out to buy a new plasma television.

I guess we'll have to wait and see just what happens in the coming months, but many people seem to think that unemployment will reach 8% (during the depression they were around 20% I believe) by April and we all know that wont be good for anyone.

With the current credit crunch effecting a number of businesses and business models nationwide, there have been few that remain unaffected. One such industry is Sports Medicine and Orthopedics. In fact, all over the country a number of these clinics have been opening up, in particular the northwestern United States. One clinic in particular "Rebound" has set a foothold in the Portland, OR area. The Portland orthopedic clinic has received quite a bit of growth and has found itself the frontrunner in the Portland orthopedics market.

It will be interesting to see if the current economic crisis will find its way into this industry, or if health care reform will begin to have an effect on the arena of Portland sports medicine. Credit Crisis-Circuit City Humpday Liquidation

Circuit City has been hammered by losing quarters for over a year. They have cash flow issues which have prevented them from being able to buy the goods they need for the holidays. Even their own suppliers are experiencing a credit crunch. To add insult to injury, the Federal Government has not given them their $80 million tax refund (you lose money as a big corporation and you can expect a hefty return many times).

So Circuit City Announced that they will be starting with a 155 store liquidation. They will sell all the goods in 155 stores starting Wednesday and then close the doors on those stores. (list of stores http://files.shareholder.com/…20List.pdf )

The company is in serious trouble, will likely be delisted off the stock exchange and bankruptcy is expected by most analysts.

As I look into this, I do not see news in Circuit City's actions. That was little more than a foregone conclusion a few weeks ago if not further back.

However, the key item to watch here is the credit crunch hitting Circuit City's suppliers.

Trains Roll On Down The Line

If there is one constant in this current economic downturn, it is the resurgence of rail in regards to supply chain distribution methods. Just today, Kansas City Southern announced that they had hit a 17% increase in quarterly profit but just missed their Wall Street forecast. KCS's net income increased about .52$ a share compared to holding steady at .48$ this time last year.

In addition, Kansas City Southern had expected to do better in regards to their 3rd quarter reports, but due to the lengthy and brutal hurricane season (Gustav and Ike in particular) earnings were slightly reduced. Many analysts are expecting to see shares rise to about .60$ next quarter.

It is obvious that rail distributors seem to be doing well in stark contrast with other land and air distributors.

With word of a global slowdown rapidly approaching a global recession, many industries are projecting doom and gloom in the upcoming quarter. Other than a few distribution businesses (Union Pacific, UPS, DHL and others), many are feeling the pinch and not only cutting back all non-essential programs, they are beginning to apply job cuts and wage freezes. Union Pacific Doing Well Despite Economy

Union Pacific also forecast profit above analysts' views for the full year. It anticipates earnings of US$4.50 to US$4.60 per share, compared with the current forecast of US$4.37 per share from analysts polled by Thompson Reuters.

Union Pacific had also mentioned that their overall volume to be down 5% in the 4th Quarter and about 3% for the entire year. UPS Raises Rates

Atlas Air Updates

On Tuesday this week, Atlas Air updated their 2008 Outlook due to tempered results driven by harsh market conditions. Due to current economic woes, both California and Massachusetts have asked for government assistance in the form of a bailout. Both these states have been spending insane amounts of revenue on a wide variety of projects over the last few years and have found their treasuries barren due to the deluge of runaway spending.

Due to the current troubling economic times, many states all around the country are facing budget deficits that are spiraling out of control. In many instances these states have been forced to cut various projects and programs. Even though the influx of money may slow down the problem in the short term, the overall issue of inflated currency will likely come around to bite us in weeks or months as it has in the past.

The truth is that the bed is made and we all have to lie in it. Credit is frozen and doesn't look to thaw for anyone in this country deemed unacceptable (-700). The only advice I could recommend is to take care of your homes and vehicles the best you can because it might be difficult to get that loan to replace a furnace or automobile. Melamine Poisoned Candy - In US for Halloween

Over 2 weeks ago, I started talking about the Melamine baby formula poisoning scandal in China, thinking to myself, that it was a matter of time before this industrial poison was tracked to products in the United States.

Unfortunately that time is today. Melamine has been found through tests in candy in Connecticut less than 1 month before Halloween.

" The discovery announced Wednesday involved the White Rabbit Creamy Candy brand, which is sold in 50 countries but has already been recalled from stores in Britain and many Asian countries. Jerry Farrell Jr., Connecticut’s consumer protection commissioner, announced that contaminated candy had been found at two stores in New Haven, one in West Hartford and one in East Haven. In each case, tests found traces of an industrial additive, melamine, in the candy.

“We’re concerned, obviously, there may have been bags sold of these before we got to them,” Mr. Farrell said on Wednesday, according to The Associated Press.

Last month, the Food and Drug Administration warned consumers about White Rabbit candy because of concerns over possible melamine contamination. In California, health officials have found traces of melamine after testing samples of White Rabbit candy. The American distributor has ordered a recall, but some of the candy may still be in stores."

For US consumers this may not be mainstream candy, consumed by everyone. It does represent a weakness in US oversight of food products shipped to the United States from China, and is likely the tip of the ice berg that has already landed on shore. We need to get a better handle on this problem before this problem is discovered everywhere from dry food stuffs on the shelves at grocery stores to ingredients used in Christmas dinner recipes.

South East Gas Shortage

The Southeastern United States has been gripped by a severe gasoline shortage that has all but ground commerce to a halt. The shortage began nearly two and a half weeks ago as Hurricane Ike battered East Texas and the refineries located in Houston. After the storm cleared out and waters receded, southern states were told that production would increase shortly and that reserves would be able to meet demand.

At first, shortly was supposed to mean 2 to 3 days tops, but quickly stretched to a week, 2 weeks and now until mid-October. It wouldn't be too unreasonable to suggest that demand will not be able to be satisfied until Election Day.

Not only is this calamity affecting just the southeastern quadrant of the United States, nearby regions will begin feeling the ripple effect as their supplies are tapped to help the southeast. This crisis isn't earning much attention on a national level due to presidential politics, and economy in crisis and the recovery effort along the East Texas coast.

Residents and businesses alike are left to fend for themselves at this point and patience is hovering just above "EMPTY".

American Airlines Revisited

Last week, I posted an article regarding American Airlines avoidance of more layoffs as their industry continues its "legacy" of financial distress. The post, which received a comment regarding high paying salaries related to not only the industry but the profession (pilots), was quite thought provoking.

Even though a number of qualified folks have been "let go" over the years, it isn't necessarily the fact that they become unemployed that is the trouble, it is the forfeiture of benefits that causes the real damage. Granted, today's job market is tough, but with experience and a good work history it can be overcome. I digress, the real issue (as I see it) is that finding another job or paycheck dulls in comparison to losing a lifetimes work and the possible pension and retirement benefits associated with the lost job.

My grandfather spent almost his entire life working in an injection molding plant. He had a great pension, retirement plan and numerous insurance benefits that went along with it. As he neared retirement, the company came upon hard financial times (mid 1970's) and laid off their most senior people first. He lost his lifetime worth of work and benefits (back in those days there were even less workers rights than nowadays). He was in his early sixties at that time and ended up working until the day he died (Oct. 8, 1987). In fact, he died at work when he should have been out in a boat fishing or cooking on the grill.

That is why I believe that the availability of jobs is beside the point. When you lose your goal (retirement), you lose everything.

Having spent the better part of the last three years working exclusively from my laptop, I have to say that I am truly amazed at the technological innovations in that relatively short period of time. I've spent quite a bit of time working from my MacBook Pro and Vaio before that, but have recently been interested in learning a bit more about Toshiba laptops. In fact, the L300-13R is of particular interest due to its customizability and sleek design.

I've spent the better part of the last few weeks running a comprehensive price comparison of the Toshiba, Acer and Sony models and am impressed with all three. In addition to my price comparison, I've been utilizing the Save Buckets website due to their quantity of quality laptops and detailed spec sheets.

This decision to integrate a new laptop into my current business venture is one I'm not taking too lightly. I feel as though I've made quite a bit of headway and expect to come to a decision relatively soon. FedEx Stocks Fall

Even shipping giant FedEx couldn't avoid the blood bath on Wall St. this week as earnings fell 22%. Interestingly enough, the global shipper met their forecast and even attributed the lackluster performance to tightening global markets and stunted growth. Over the last year shares have fallen from $1.58 to $1.23. Granted, that isn't too alarming, especially since their revenue increased $.75 million last year alone.

"As FedEx faces today's especially tough economic challenges, we'll continue to hold the line on costs across all segments," Chairman and Chief Executive Fred Smith said. "This includes lowering variable incentive compensation, controlling discretionary spending and limiting staff."

In addition to potential cutbacks and layoffs to keep their metrics in line, FedEx has also "significantly curtailed" bonuses and hirings unless it is essential. I wonder how far up the line the cutbacks have gone. I don't expect too far.

Anyone that has done business in logistics or warehousing in the Dallas - Fort Worth area will have no doubts that the area is taking off in logistics, gaining respect and prominence as one of the primary areas to do business in the United States.

My first experience there happened several years ago, when Motorola shut down their facility in Harvard, IL (60 miles west of Chicago in cow country formerly the home of the CEO Chris Galvin) moved their cellular operations to Fort Worth.

As much as I like Illinois (my own home state) back then Ft worth was cheaper for lots of reasons but mostly labor.

These days they have a new advantage in cost, high oil prices and the proximity to shipping freight via rail.

North Texas' rail networks are a big factor in competition for warehousing, according to the study written by the University of North Texas' Dr. Terrance Pohlen.
"The strategic location of the area has attracted many businesses seeking short transit times from a single point to the U.S. market," Dr. Pohlen said.
"Intermodal freight from Asia can reach the metroplex within three weeks as opposed to four weeks to arrive in Houston or the East Coast.
"Trucks departing Dallas-Fort Worth can reach over 75 percent of the U.S. population within a two-day drive time."

World Markets Going Haywire

World financial markets went haywire this week due to widespread ffears stemming from the instability of Wall St. this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Index plunged over 500 points Monday, rebounded slightly on Tuesday then plummeted an additional 450 points Wednesday only to receive modest gains the next two days to end down a little over 100 points for the week.

In addition to market instability, the closings of Lehman Brothers and the sale of Merrill Lynch will displace thousands of workers on Wall St. alone as well as thousands more across the country and the world. With unemployment rates rising over 6% already, the job market is tightening and will likely lead to additional cross-board cuts as the quarter rolls on.

The Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury Dept. announced a comprehensive bailout plan for the financial industry and pumped nearly $700 billion dollars of taxpayer money into the economy this past week to suture the wound. The bailout is expected to reach nearly $1 trillion soon and may eclipse that mark by months end.

Where is the United States Congress in all of this? I feel like we are shooting from the hip here.

Skorpion Zinc Mine Not Impacted by Strike in Namibia

Here is the word on the recent strike in Namibia in regards to the Skorpion Zinc mine.

Anglo American's Skorpion Zinc mine in Namibia has not been affected by a week-long rail and road strike, which ended early on Wednesday, a spokesman told Reuters on Friday.
"The Skorpion mine is not affected by the TransNamib truck strike," the spokesman said in an email.
The strike at TransNamib Holdings Ltd., a Namibian transport operator, disrupted road and railway transport in the country.
Skorpion Zinc is Africa's largest zinc mine, producing around 12,500 tonnes of zinc per month.

It should be noted, that its not always possible to tell just how much impact a strike of this nature has on operations until a few quarters have passed and the financial statements can be reviewed more holistically.

Otherwise, taking statements like this at face value is about as useful as believing in the benefits of infomercials or acne treatment pitches on from a dermatologist just back from a luncheon with a drug rep.

Uganda Working to Avert Strike

On the same day that a terrorist attack on the US Embassy in Yemen took place and on the same day that terrorists attempted to bomb another section of Nigeria oil pipeline, Uganda was working to avoid a trucker's strike.

In Uganda they are not preparing to strike because of high oil prices, they are striking because of the poor state of the customs parking yard, structures claim is causing damage to their rigs.

They are also protesting alleged harassment by Ugandan revenue security guards. These agents are accused of extorting high sums of money and harassing truck drivers. The strike had been averted last Wednesday, with the promise of negotiations which have preceded, but it looks like the strike might still occur.

A similar strike was also threatened five months back, for the same reasons, but nothing has been done in that time. It's unknown how much impact a strike in Uganda would have on the local economy, on the shipment of food or fuel or other supplies or even of imports or exports ranging from food and medicine to steam cleaners.

Stocks Plummet, Regulation Looming?

There has been a lot of attention being paid to the failing financial markets in the United States and around the globe of late, and ultimately the fate of many lie in the hands of a few. Regulation is an excellent tool that when used correctly can bolster the economy, but can also inhibit the free market and lead to disadvantages for companies or industries that can't afford the ear of their local government.

It will be interesting to see if the Wall St. crisis ultimately leads to an era of government regulation into the free market economy. ABF To Expand

ABF Freight has announced quicker transit times for their North American network Tuesday amid fears of recession. Apparently 24,000 U.S. "station to station" lanes will be sped up.
