Toyota Cuts Outlook

Like so many other businesses, Toyota announced that they will need to cut their groups operating outlook due to their first ever annual operating loss. The loss is a result of the crippling worldwide economic downturn. The cut comes half a dozen weeks after chief rival Honda announced a cut to their outlook as well as again a week or so later when they cut once again.
"This is very, very, very bad," said Koichi Ogawa, chief portfolio manager at Daiwa SB Investments. "There's a chance they could fall into the red in the next business year as well. "This is also not just a problem for Toyota. What is good for Toyota is good for the Japanese economy."
Currently automakers across the world are attempting to deal with a number of crisis' stemming from the global recession and are coming out thiner than expected. In addition to Toyota's operating issues we are well aware of Detroit's big-three's woes and the effect they are having on an already down economy. Many of the large car companies are making cuts on a number of levels including executive benefits and perks as well as cutting contributions and sponsorships.
It will be interesting to see where the auto-makers find themselves in the upcoming quarter as as well as spring 09'. I will also be curious to see where the United States Congress will come in regarding an economic bail-out in the form of a bridge loan. Only time will tell.

Trade Show Booths

Having spoken briefly about a number of businesses that have been reshuffling and making drastic cuts, I wanted to change things up a bit today and talk about tools that many businesses are utilizing in order to accelerate their growth potential during these troubling economic times. Lately a growing number of small and large businesses are utilizing trade shows as a positive avenue for business development and growth. Although there are a wide variety of trade shows for an even wider variety of businesses and fields, there are a few things that remain homogenous and that is the need for those businesses to have trade show booths
You might not realize it, but there is actually quite a bit involved in regards to selecting a trade show booth that will not only showcase your business, but deliver an air of professionalism. I remember visiting a trade show for new media in Boston, MA a few years ago and passing the "booths" by that were merely card tables with a tablecloth and poorly crafter banner. I mean, how can you try to sell someone your service from a "booth" like that? I suppose they may have had their reasons, but it must have been embarrassing watching a steady stream of convention goers walking right passed your booth all weekend long.
In regards to what makes a positive impression on trade show attendees might vary depending on the venue, but you can rest assured having banner stands and a Pipe and Drape display is probably a good start. Oh and do yourself and your business a favor and don't just run out to the party store to grab a cheap table skirt, take your time and find one that matches and is of good quality. If you are planning on renting out booth space at a trade show or convention, be sure to get together with the venue and learn more about their accommodations. Who knows, if you perform well you might be heading in the opposite direction as everyone else during economic upheaval.

Fed/Ex Makes News Again

Sometimes I feel like this blog should be called "Fed/Ex Distribution Business News" due to the fact that I am constantly reporting about Fed/Ex and their cutbacks and whatnot. Well, here we are again as the package delivery giant announced a 20% pay cut for CEO Fred Smith in addition to the suspension of their retirement plan contributions company-wide. The news comes in response to the bleak economic climate.
"Our financial performance is increasingly being challenged by some of the worst economic conditions in the company's 35-year operating history," Smith said in a statement. "It's tough, but it's a sign of the times," Al Meyers, portfolio manager of the AHA Diversified Equity Fund, which owns FedEx shares, said of the pay cuts. "The fact that executives including Fred Smith are taking pay cuts sends a message to employees that 'we're all in the same boat,' which is a positive."
Not only has Fed?Ex taken a hit with the financial crisis in full swing. UPS has seen overall volume declines as well as reduced share value on the NYSE index. The current economic slowdown that became a full blown recession is impacting the nation much like that sucking sound you here in the bathtub when you pull the stopper. The only question I have is when is somebody going to put the stopper back in instead of just running more water.

Save Time Document Scanning

Due to the Sarbanes-Oxley mandates it is now more important than ever to maintain accurate and organized records (unless you want to incur heavy fines and possibly lose your business). Having said that, many organizations of all sizes are changing the way that they keep records. Having worked in medical records while living in New Hampshire, I am quite familiar with the process in which records are swapped from cumbersome files into a database via document scanning
There are a number of organizations that specialize in the business or electronic records as well as document scanning, but there is one that stand head and shoulders above the rest; RecordNations. As I mentioned earlier, whether you are a small business or a fortune 500 company, Sarbanes-Oxley as well as general tidiness have undoubtedly forced your hand into moving further into the digital age (at least with records). In addition to transferring records via scanning services, RecordNations also is a provider of storage for records as well as an off site tape storage warehouse.
If you have been considering moving toward electronic record keeping or are looking for an organized "solution" to your disorganized records, you may want to give these guys a look. I don't think you'll be disappointed with their services and level of commitment.

Fed/Ex Share Drop

The current economic crisis is really beginning to wear on shipping companies nationwide, and the good folks at Fed/Ex are rally beginning to see there share value dropping to the tune of 11% as of the end of last week. In addition to shares dropping 11%, Fed/Ex also just slashed their projected financial outlook for the next calender year. On December 18th Fed/Ex is expected to deliver their actual '09 outlook and it doesn't look too pretty.
"Fedex also sharply lowered its previously announced fiscal 2009 earnings forecast, to a range of $3.50 to $4.75 per share, from $4.75 to $5.25, as "significantly weaker macroeconomic conditions are expected to offset the benefits from lower fuel prices and the announced departure of DHL from the U.S. domestic package market."
In addition to this glum forecast by Fed/Ex, UPS has also had similar issues during this crisis and it will be interesting to see just how far down the rabbit hole we wind up. I suspect that we are only seeing the beginning of this and that things will likely get worse after the holiday season due to the fact that folks wont be sending as much freight and packages via the two carriers.

Weight Loss Tea

There are many industries that are feeling the pinch nowadays due to the economy, but many importers are actually doing quite well. Fortunately, there are many great products coming into the North American markets from the Far East. One of those products is Wu-Yi Tea. This weight loss tea (in addition to being USDA certified) is enhanced with polyphenol, which introduces heart healthy antioxidants into your system as well as helps to increase your metabolism.
In addition to having a host of great varieties of diet tea and supplements, Wuyi tea also comes in a cleansing tea that is used to drive impurities from your system. If you have been trying a number of different supplements to lose weight or live a healthy organic lifestyle, you may want to take a closer look at Wu-Yi Tea. There are many supplements on the market today that aren't backed by the USDA or provide the same benefits that Wuyi tea does, so why not go with the real thing in place of the fly-by-nighters.

Supply Chain Mystery to CEO's

I just read an article that blew my mind! Would you believe that nearly 47% of global businesses surveyed claimed that they need to pay more attention to their supply chain. Apparently 350 Senior Executives were surveyed and the results of these surveys are truly perplexing. In addition to the aforementioned numbers, 16% said that they paid an adequate amount of attention to their supply chain while a whopping 10% said they don't pay any attention at all!
In addition to those numbers, this is a snippet of the rest of the article;
"While 38 percent of companies did rate their supply chain as resilient, a more worrying 42 percent stated that their ability to manage risk had been outpaced by the expansion of their global supply chains.
According to the survey, while many companies knew the risks of supply chain, and the benefits to making sure their chain is resilient and well-managed, many glossed over this in their day-to-day operations. Nearly half of the companies only measured risk assessment annually.
“Businesses appear to be increasingly vulnerable to supply-chain disruptions that can have a catastrophic impact on business performance,” said Dan Brutto, president of UPS International."
Having worked in various shipping warehouses and other aspects within the supply chain, I have found that oftentimes the left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing. It is interesting to see that due to the growth of these businesses on a global scale that they are unable to manage their newer/larger supply chain with a hands on approach.

Tactical Gear

I've been reading a lot of articles in the paper and online regarding different techniques people are using in order to protect their valuables during this uncertain economic time. I was fascinated to find that not only safe's are being purchased in record numbers, but also police gear and weapons etc. In addition to all the tactical gear people are scooping up, home alarm systems and the like are being purchased nationwide. I'm not too sure what people are thinking is going to happen out "there", but it might not be too bad to be prepared for anything that might happen.
After looking at a couple of websites, I found that the LA Police Gear website had some pretty interesting items for individuals and businesses alike. Personally, I like the selection of boots and outerwear. After doing a lot of hiking last year and wearing my soles thin, it might be nice to have something a little more solid and reliable. If you find yourself in the market for anything a previously mentioned, I think you might want to check out the tactical gear at LA Police Gear.

CP Rail Hit by Recession

Canadian Pacific Rail has announced that they will be forced to cut 600 union jobs in order to better weather the current economic recession. The Calgary, AB company currently has a workforce of 16,000, but of course, due to the cuts payroll will be lighter in the upcoming quarter. In addition to trimming nearly a thousand jobs, corporate executives will also be restricting air travel on corporate jets as well as doing away with different corporate benefits.
In the message to staff, Chief Executive Fred Green said the "coming months will not be easy ones." He said his goal is to get the "franchise back on track" by focusing on "containing costs on all fronts, in tough ways," the newspaper reported, noting Green held a town hall meeting with staff on Tuesday.
Up until this point, rail appeared to be "weathering" the financial storm quite well in comparison to other industries. It will be interesting to see where things go from here for unions in general as well as alternative freight options.

All Inclusive Vacations Booming

There are many industries that have been effected by the current recession, but the all inclusive vacation business has not been one of them. Whether or not people are trying to just get away from it all and enjoy life, or they are choosing to spend their hard earned money wisely, they are visiting SuperClubs establishments all across the Caribbean. One of the most popular destinations appears to be the Jamaica all inclusive resort in Montego Bay. Whether or not this is due to the miles of beautiful sandy beaches or the lush foliage and countless restaurants and nightclubs is up for debate (well, not really).
In addition to the wonderful amenities of these resorts, many people have come to experience a variety of all inclusive romantic vacations as well as Caribbean weddings. The wedding packages are truly remarkable. Imagine being able to focus solely on that beautiful day while a team of planers see to it that everything flows perfectly and seamlessly. In addition, each resort offers a variety of different settings and styles in order to capture the picturesque day in the manner you always dreamt it would be.
With so many wonderful and enchanting vacation options, it would be hard to imagine a better place to spend a week or two with your hard earned cash during this economic downturn. Surely a visit to one of these fine resorts would be a welcome "pick-me-up" to a year of financial turmoil, and I suppose that is why business is better than ever for SuperClubs.

UAL Corp to Cut 1,200

The dismal economy has hit many industries very hard over the last year or so and folks in the airline industry are on the front lines once again. After so many years of restructuring and insolvency, UAL (the parent company o United Airlines) has announced that they will be eliminating 1,200 workers in an attempt to cut nearly 7,000 jobs through 2009. When the cuts were first announced late in November, UAL employed well over 55,000. After the projected cuts, UAL is expected to be able to run partial staff in order to meet current economic conditions head on.
Apparently after being battered by high fuel costs and persistent maintenance issues, the airline industry decided to downsize in order to stave off insolvency. It is unclear whether or not the current economic crisis will require UAL to make deeper cuts, but at the moment fuel prices (which are at their 1998 levels) can't be labeled the culprit, at least not yet.
It will be interesting to see how the holiday travel season plays out for this industry. It is clear that a lot of people aren't traveling this year due to economic concerns as well as ticket prices. I suspect that more cuts will be on the way for the 09-10 calender year.
Funny how much can change in a week...

Coffee Will Never Be The Same

There are many "truths" in the marketplace as well as "myths". One ultimate truth to the marketplace is that if you want to be the best, you have to have an almost fanatical commitment to your product or service as well as a deep knowledge of all aspects related to said business or product. Well, the folks at Intelligentsia Coffee are about as fanatical as it comes! Imagine spending years overseas and around the world gathering information and knowledge in order to create some unbelievable coffee.
In addition to traveling the world in pursuit of knowledge and old-world techniques and traditions, Intelligentsia is able to get the best deals available on cheap bulk coffee beans then apply their vintage German roasting techniques to create excellent quality coffees. If creating cheap bulk coffee, Intelligentsia enlists the aid of some of the worlds most renowned importers to ensure they only buy bulk coffee from socially and environmentally responsible organizations.
If the aforementioned information about Intelligentsia hasn't got you craving a cup of German roasted coffee, maybe the fact that they have won numerous awards  and accolades over the last four years by a number of industry leaders and aficionados will change your mind. So if it is quality coffee at a quality price you are looking for, then Intelligentsia should be your brand of choice.

Big Three Bailout Cont.

Today the United States Congress send a draft to the White house regarding a roughly 15$ billion dollar bailout for the automakers. It is unclear what will happen at this point with the draft, but I expect (with proper oversight) that a deal will be in place in the coming weeks to stave of more job looses as well as a further plummeting of the nations fragile "fiscal morale".
In regards to congress, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) went on the record to say that he was not pleased with loaning taxpayer money to these companies, but followed by saying that it must be done.
There have been numerous polls conducted and America, it would seem, would prefer the big 3 to file bankruptcy. I'm not too sure that would be a bad thing. Granted, if you are working for the big 3 that might not be so great, but there are a lot of industries in trouble and I'd hate to see them all start flooding to DC for a handout.
This is a slippery slope and will lead us to ruin if we let it get out of control. As this story is developing, there will likely be new news in the coming days, so we'll see where we end up on Tuesday.

Many small and large business owners have been utilizing a number of hosting plans through various sources while utilizing the SAAS (Software as a service) availability offered by Phase2.com. Imagine the benefits of utilizing SAAS hosting plans for your small business. Not only would you have 24/7 tech support available if you need it, but you wont have to worry about expensive tech and support technicians on your payroll or nipping up your bottom lie whenever you encounter a technical issue.
In addition to offering a variety of great services and plans, Phase2.com (Backed by Microsoft), offers tfs hosting. For those of you unfamiliar with working with a hosted team foundation server, Phase2.com has a wealth of information available as well as a guarantee that you will be running at a higher level in 30 days or less!

Auto-Bailout Pleas

The big-three American automakers will be back in front of congress today to deliver their plea (plan) for a bridge loan to keep their businesses afloat until the next quarter. The three have put up a lot of window-dressing to try and sway public opinion, but it is unclear as to whether or not $1 dollar salaries and selling private jets are likely to sway the United States Congress. Regardless, the automakers are going to deliver their proposal this afternoon.
In addition to offering up that proposal, the big three have upped the ante to 34 billion dollars from the "meager" 25 billion they requested about a month ago. Whether this congress accepts the proposal and opens up the checkbook, undoubtedly the automakers will return to the table after Jan. 2oth when the new president and congress are sworn in. Besides, third times a charm.
It will be interesting to see how well they are received when they arrive on capitol hill. This time instead of flying in on private jets they will be arriving via motorcade of hybrid vehicles. Honestly, I think everyone is tired of all this window-dressing. We've been through all this and just want a game plan for viability.

Weight Loss Tea; A Miracle In Itself

We've been discussing the faltering economy as well as the auto-bailout at some length lately, and today I wanted to touch on an interesting and natural way to help control your health and overall well-being during the stressful holiday season. Believe it or not, there are a wide variety of certified organic teas on the market that are not only tasty, but can actually help control your weight. Granted, if you eat a ton of sweets and other goodies this holiday season, not even Wu-Yi Tea is going to be able to help keep off the excess "baggage".
The aforementioned Wuyi tea is actually one of many organic supplements offered by Wu-Yi. In addition to their Diet tea, they also offer cleansing tea, tea slim caps as well as other organic weight loss supplements. Despite all of the easy ways to take your diet off the beaten path this holiday season, Wu-Yi will be there to lead you back to healthful-sanity. In fact, not only is this tea the most potent weight control and Weight loss tea on the market, but it is also certified organic by the USDA.
If you are a fan of tea such as I am, and are looking for a tasty, healthy alternative to the other healthy concoctions that leave you nervous as to what you just ingested, give Wu-Yi Tea a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

CEO of Ford to Earn $1 Salary

For those of us who can't get enough of the ongoing auto-industry bailout drama, today the CEO of Ford promised to lower his annual salary to $1 in order to secure a 25 Billion dollar bridge loan to secure the business. The announcement comes mere weeks after the big three automakers CEO's arrived in Washington, DC for a hearing via individual private jets that cost an estimated 50K apiece. Apparently arriving hat in hand looking for a handout via private jet is the type of behavior that will get one laughed at even in that town.
In addition to the Ford CEO's salary pledge, he continues to claim that the company will sell its five private jets and attempt to cut United Auto Workers Union labor costs as well as other belt tightening activities. Honestly, it is about time that Ford decided to develop a comprehensive plan to submit to congress. Personally, I think that the union has had Ford and Michigan legislators over the barrel for years and is finally about to reap what they have sewn. I come from a union family and I have to say that the UAW has been raping and pillaging the auto industry forever. I mean, 60K a year to work the assembly line, that is ridiculous!
Class warrior aside, it will be interesting to follow this story as things develop in the coming days. I don't expect to see any handouts the rest of the year. I believe it will be up to the 11th congress and President-Elect Obama.

Changing Industries

Due to the current financial crisis, many people are losing their jobs and many industries are distressed. Fortunately there are still a lot of options for job seekers and those who are looking to move into other industries. More often than not, it is essential to have a degree in most entry level positions as well as some form of experience in order to attain a position. Luckily, there are a lot of affordable and comprehensive training schools and institutions all around the country for those interested in moving into the culinary and hospitality services fields.
Believe it or not, many people have been moving into the airline industry despite its recent tumultuous nature. Flight attendant school as well as other hospitality institutions have been seeing record enrollment. In addition to the record enrollment, there has been an increasing amount of graduates moving into the industry all across the nation despite the economic slump.
I have to admit that I really enjoy flying and I couldn't think of a more geographically interesting industry to be in. Honestly, I don't know how well I would do away from my family, but nevertheless it looks like a pretty cool career path. If you've been thinking about shifting gears into a new career and enjoy the business, then maybe you ought to check out a career in the airline industry.

Business Closings

Earlier today I wrote an article regarding all of the businesses that had announced various closings all across the United States, but neglected to stress the impact this would have on the economy as a whole. I have spent some time thinking about the impact of all those store closings. Granted, some of the stores that are shutting down are small and will likely only release 20-30 people into the ranks of the unemployed, but some of the retail establishments that I mentioned employ hundreds and could be devastating to small cities and towns across the nation.
I recently moved from Manchester, NH to Austin, TX. When I was living in Manchester I worked at a party supply store on South Willow St. as an assistant manager. While working on that street I took some time and got to know a lot of the employees of all the stores that surrounded mine and came to realize that many of those stores would likely go out of business if the nation headed further into recession. Unfortunately, shortly after I received that email I mentioned in the article earlier today, I was contacted by a former coworker who told me that nearly every plaza on the street had 2-3 businesses that would be out of business by the new year.
In addition to that awful news, my mother in-law just told my wife and I that the Mall of New Hampshire also had a number of stores closing including The Gap, JC Penney, KB Toys and a number of others. As I mentioned earlier, the closings aren't due to a poor business model or bad management decisions. The stores are closing due to the fact that consumers are getting pinched from al sides and don't know whether they will have a job in the near future. You cannot blame anyone for holding onto their money in times like this. I will be interested to see if the banks begin lending again in the near future so that the economy can hiccup its way along. I suspect we are just getting into the beginning of our woes here. It will be "interesting: to see just where things go in 2009.

Business Website Design

Many businesses have been redesigning there online store fronts and online presence since the economy has gone in the tank and have been seeing mixed results. Granted, many consumers have "packed it in" in regards to making excess purchases, but savvy business owners know that by updating and streamlining their web presence that increased traffic may lead to increased sales.
There are a number of great resources for online businesses in the marketplace right now regarding business website design, business web hosting services as well as a number of freelance writers looking for assignments who specialize in website content writing. Having said that, many of the aforementioned businesses have not only beefed up their online presence, but have begun employing viral campaigns as well as traditional advertising campaigns in order to generate a buzz and/or traffic to their stores and online store fronts. I realize this is nothing new, but the increase in small business website design volume has gone through the roof. Honestly, I suspect this is due to not only an ailing economy, but the fact that designers and hosting services are lowering there fees and other charges to spur there bottom lines as this year draws to a close.
Regardless of your business model, it is important to maintain several strategies as well as contingency plans so you and your business will be ready for anything that may happen in this down market. I suggest bulking up your online presence by website redesign as well as viral campaigns.

Business Closings

There is little to no doubt that you have received a comprehensive listing of all of the retail establishments that are being forced to close their doors due to the current economic recession our nation is engulfed in. Having worked in retail for a number of years I have to say that I would be interested to have a look at some of these organizations same store sales and profit and loss reports to see just how terrible they were doing. I mean, you can only get so much information from a forecast.
Anyway, I was amazed to see some of the stores listed in the emails as no longer being viable. Here are a few of the stores listed in the aforementioned email;
  • Ann Taylor closing 117 locations
  • Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, Catherines closing 150 locations
  • Eddie Bauer closing 27 locations
  • Talbots closing all locations
  • Gap closing 85 locations
  • Footlocker closing 140 locations
  • Zales closing 187 locations by January
  • Disney closing 98 locations
  • Home Depot closing 15 locations
  • Linens and Things closing all locations
  • Movie Gallery closing all locations
  • Pacific Sunwear closing all locations
  • Pep Boys closing 33 locations
  • Sprint/Nextel closing 133 locations
  • JC Penney closing undisclosed number of locations
  • KB Toys closing 356 locations
The above list was just some of the big named stores that are closing their doors between now and January! As I mentioned before, having worked in retail management for a number of years I think I can say that this is not good for anybody. Not only will a number of businesses on Main St. be going under, but a lot of quality people will be out of work for the new year. These businesses are not guilty of poor business models or anything in that regard. They are instead victims of the crisis that has started on Wall St. and are likely not to be given any assistance by Washington. It is upsetting to see so many jobs lost between now and January and what is more upsetting is the fact that this information is nowhere to be found on the network news.

Profit and Loss Report Tips

Operating a business in a down market can be a bit difficult, especially if you are trying to streamline all aspects of your business. There are many ways to watch your bottom line and lessen the burden of streamlining your business in regards to your P&L. Many small business owners have utilized discount wholesalers and the like when ordering supplies, point of sale hardware as well as uniforms when attempting the aforementioned.
One such company that is assisting businesses in meeting their uniform and accessory needs is iD by Landau. Creators of quality products ranging from hotel uniforms and spa uniforms to various apparel accessories and restaurant uniforms, iD by Landau offers small businesses (and large) a wide variety of inexpensive quality uniform options in this down market. Auto Manufacturers No Bailout?

Ford, Chrysler and GM may not be in the auto manufacturing business for much longer, especially if they aren't the beneficiary of a supplemental government bailout plan congress has been squabbling over for the last week or so. Some may argue that the industry "leaders" who have been in financial trouble for almost my entire life are too "American" to be allowed to fail. Honestly, whether something is done or not, I highly doubt they will be able to compete due to their bowing down to unions and excessive pension plan payouts. Don't get me wrong, I am a supporter of unions and workers rights, but when you are running a huge corporation you need to be able to stand up to those unions to keep yourself in business.
This morning, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson told congress that the 700 Billion dollar bailout plan is not intended to help individual businesses that are not involved in the banking crisis. My thoughts are that they aren't in Paulson's little Goldman Sachs circle so they will not be bailed out. In my opinion, this whole thing stinks. I do agree that the bailout money should be used as prescribed, but when Paulson continues to change the prescription from day to day of course failing businesses and industries will be looking for a handout. This whole thing has been handled so sloppily that it keeps snow-balling into a bigger fiasco by the hour.
It is unclear whether or not President Bush and his administration will allow supplemental money for the auto industry during his last days in office. With the squabbling continuing on the hill between democrats and republicans the auto-makers will likely declare bankruptcy before any decision or legislation is crafted.

Despite Ailing Economy Muscle Cars Thrive

Even in these difficult economic times there are some industries that are thriving, and believe it or not American muscle cars are driving into collections all around the country at a rapid pace. We all know the image of the American muscle car. In addition to being stunning pieces of Americana that ooze excess horsepower and command respect on the road, now you can find a wide selection to either buy or gawk at (like I do) on Classic Cars' muscle car classifieds. Whether you are looking to drool, buy or sell, the classified will satisfy you in one way or another.
In addition to having a wide array of feature cars, the classified also has a dealer showcase that will pull at your heartstrings. After visiting this site, I have a little voice in my head that keeps echoing, "Buy Muscle Car!" Honestly, that voice should be saying, "Hope Someone Sell Muscle Car Cheap!" Seriously though, the site has a lot of cool cars and features that will make your search or "drool session" a lot more directed and easier. I've gone to the site a number of time just to gawk at the cherry red 55 Ford T-Bird, classic! Even if you aren't looking to buy or sell you should definitely check out their muscle cars they are truly impressive. I can only imagine what it must have been like when these cars turned country roads into drag strips.

U.S. Blocks Chinese Milk Products FDA Puts Burden on Importers

milk-tainted Prove you are importing a 'safe' milk related product (and take on the liability of that proof) and the FDA will release your shipment into the United States.  On your mark, get ready, set, go....

Not in such a hurry?  Who can blame you.

The US and the FDA are showing their ineffectuality both in their 100% ban and in pushing the burden not on their own regulators and testers that are too under staffed to make a difference, but to importers of record.

Federal food safety officials yesterday began holding up shipments of food from China that contain milk or milk-derived ingredients in the largest effort to date to keep products tainted with the industrial chemical melamine from reaching U.S. consumers.

The Food and Drug Administration is requiring importers of the halted shipments to test for the chemical, which is used to make plastic and fertilizer but has been added to human and animal food to boost protein readings. The types of products likely to be waylaid are cookies, candies, and other goods made with milk or milk powder.

If an importer can prove his product is not tainted, FDA will release it, said Steve Solomon, the agency's deputy associate commissioner for compliance and policy. The agency also will step up its testing of products already on the market.

U.S. Blocks Chinese Milk Products

The obvious flaw in this action is that there will still be some importers that will route these products through other countries and use false information, documentation or whatever it takes to move their goods, defective or not.

This may block the easy items, but the hard work has yet to be done.

Unemployment Summary Nov. 08

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics released the "Unemployment Situation Summary" this morning and the results were anything but good. Unemployment has risen .4% from 6.1% to 6.5% while payroll employment shed 240,000. The complete summary can be found here.
This is quite alarming and does not show any signs of letting up. It seems as though the federal government is trying to throw everything that they have at the situation and the best that can be done is to slow the decline. Granted, we all expect them to do something, it is just a matter of time before they run out of stuff to throw at this thing. I mean, the Federal Reserve has dropped rates to the point where they are almost out of points to shave. In addition to that, I find that the point drops only stave off the decline for a month or so. I also think that a second stimulus is going to do little to nothing to remedy the situation due to the fact that the first stimulus did little to nothing. I don't know about you, but I just used mine to pay some bills. I don't know anyone who rushed out to buy a new plasma television.
I guess we'll have to wait and see just what happens in the coming months, but many people seem to think that unemployment will reach 8% (during the depression they were around 20% I believe) by April and we all know that wont be good for anyone.

Orthopedic Clinics Unaffected By Credit Crunch

With the current credit crunch effecting a number of businesses and business models nationwide, there have been few that remain unaffected. One such industry is Sports Medicine and Orthopedics. In fact, all over the country a number of these clinics have been opening up, in particular the northwestern United States. One clinic in particular "Rebound" has set a foothold in the Portland, OR area. The Portland orthopedic clinic has received quite a bit of growth and has found itself the frontrunner in the Portland orthopedics market.
It will be interesting to see if the current economic crisis will find its way into this industry, or if health care reform will begin to have an effect on the arena of Portland sports medicine. Honestly, it is too early to tell for sure, but there is a possibility that the industry could see some changes should President-Elect Obama or Congress try their hand at the aforementioned reform. As for Rebound, I would expect them to continue their success in the Portland orthopedic market.

Credit Crisis-Circuit City Humpday Liquidation

utterli-image
Circuit City has been hammered by losing quarters for over a year. They have cash flow issues which have prevented them from being able to buy the goods they need for the holidays. Even their own suppliers are experiencing a credit crunch. To add insult to injury, the Federal Government has not given them their $80 million tax refund (you lose money as a big corporation and you can expect a hefty return many times).

So Circuit City Announced that they will be starting with a 155 store liquidation. They will sell all the goods in 155 stores starting Wednesday and then close the doors on those stores. (list of stores http://files.shareholder.com/…20List.pdf )

The company is in serious trouble, will likely be delisted off the stock exchange and bankruptcy is expected by most analysts.

As I look into this, I do not see news in Circuit City's actions. That was little more than a foregone conclusion a few weeks ago if not further back.

However, the key item to watch here is the credit crunch hitting Circuit City's suppliers.

Trains Roll On Down The Line

If there is one constant in this current economic downturn, it is the resurgence of rail in regards to supply chain distribution methods. Just today, Kansas City Southern announced that they had hit a 17% increase in quarterly profit but just missed their Wall Street forecast. KCS's net income increased about .52$ a share compared to holding steady at .48$ this time last year.
In addition, Kansas City Southern had expected to do better in regards to their 3rd quarter reports, but due to the lengthy and brutal hurricane season (Gustav and Ike in particular) earnings were slightly reduced. Many analysts are expecting to see shares rise to about .60$ next quarter.
It is obvious that rail distributors seem to be doing well in stark contrast with other land and air distributors.

Global Recession

With word of a global slowdown rapidly approaching a global recession, many industries are projecting doom and gloom in the upcoming quarter. Other than a few distribution businesses (Union Pacific, UPS, DHL and others), many are feeling the pinch and not only cutting back all non-essential programs, they are beginning to apply job cuts and wage freezes. This is not good for anyone, but appears to be the direction in which things are headed (already there).
Many of the worlds great economic thinkers are engaged in a debate to determine the best course of action and for the time being that debate appears to have produced a consensus of , "We don't know what the hell is going on or how to fix it." Many businesses are taking the short-term measures that they must to continue to compete in the ailing market, but it is only a matter of time before more drastic measures have to be taken. I oftentimes wonder if the steps will include many of the distribution businesses selling off to the highest bidder much as the retail banks have been the last couple of months.
It is unclear as to how long this global recession will last, but many are saying that the outlook for 2009 is bleak. I, and many others I assume, are hoping that the passed stimulus package will begin to take hold and help stabilize and reverse our current course (at least in the US).

Birthday Ideas

Have you ever had to throw a birthday party for a friend, coworker or loved one and had no clue where to start? Well, now it is as easy as copying and pasting http://www.birthday-ideas.com/ into your browser. The Birthday-Ideas site is great, they have an impressive array of birthday themes for all ages and interests as well as a wide assortment of Birthday Cake Ideas. Personally, I like the Hollywood Theme Birthday Cake Ideas the best, especially the wild red carpet colors and textures.
Even if you have simple tastes and don't want to go too extravagant, Birthday-Ideas has many more demure creative palettes to choose from. In addition to offering tons of birthday ideas, they also offer romantic, wedding, anniversary and Valentine ideas. Honestly, this is a great site to visit when trying to plan a party. I mean, have you ever been into a party store without a clue regarding just what you are looking for? If you would like to avoid wandering around a party store for hours on end then visit Birthday-Ideas and create a solid game plan so that you can spend more time enjoying the party rather than wondering what to do.

Union Pacific Doing Well Despite Economy

Union Pacific is doing quite well even though the rest of the economy is in the tank. In fact, Union Pacific announced late last week that they are expecting their 4th Quarter earnings to be well above their expectations. Functioning as the nations largest railroad organization Union Pacific is expecting their long-standing contracts will lift them above the pitfalls of the current economy to the tune of an increase somewhere between $1.22 and $1.35 per share in the 4th Quarter.
Union Pacific also forecast profit above analysts' views for the full year. It anticipates earnings of US$4.50 to US$4.60 per share, compared with the current forecast of US$4.37 per share from analysts polled by Thompson Reuters.
Union Pacific had also mentioned that their overall volume to be down 5% in the 4th Quarter and about 3% for the entire year. It is amazing to see how Union Pacific has been able to utilize their track record of stability in order to shore up additional business while maintaining their mandate and quality for longstanding clients. Although they expect demand to be light next year, Union Pacific CEO Jim Young expects about a 2% drop in 2009.

Photo Blankets

Having moved away from home a while back, I have been looking for interesting gift ideas for family and friends back home and came across VisionBedding.com's photo blankets and photo throws. If you are asking yourself just what a photo throw or blanket is, well the answer is simple. Imagine being able to take a photograph of anything and have that image faithfully reproduced on a blanket or pillow. When I say "faithfully reproduced", I am talking the exact image in the same quality and clarity of a digital photo!
Another great feature of VisionBedding is there wide assortment of quality patterns and high thread count options. If you are like me and have been considering some interesting holiday ideas for loved ones, you may want to give VisionBedding a look. Not only do they offer great ideas, but also responsive customer service as well as affordable prices and reliable shipping.

UPS Raises Rates

Unaffected by the growing financial crisis no more, UPS has announced a general rate increase of 5.9% on both air and international express shipments which will go into effect in January of 09'. Apparently the general rate increase will likely be focused more towards businesses than individuals, however individuals who meet the narrow prerequisites will likely pay the increase.
Personally, I'm surprised this increase hasn't come sooner rather than later due to the hit that shipping distributors have been taking. Currently, it is unclear that rates might be increased once more depending upon fiscal issues.

Atlas Air Updates

On Tuesday this week, Atlas Air updated their 2008 Outlook due to tempered results driven by harsh market conditions. Currently, Atlas runs both commercial and charter business to a wide array of clients in both the United States and Canada. Prior to the refreshed update, Atlas had forecast approximate earnings of $85 million, but has reigned in that figure to $65 million due to the aforementioned climate.
“We have updated our outlook for 2008 based on market conditions affecting our Scheduled Service and Commercial Charter business segments, where lower utilization of our 747-200 aircraft and weaker yields are having a negative impact,” said William J Flynn, President and Chief Executive.
Atlas Air expects a rebound in the second quarter of 09' due to an extensive agreement with DHL which will implement an express network as well as solidify their efficiency. The agreement had been blocked as of Oct. 08',  but will be lifted in order to benefit both companies who have been hit hard by the recent economic crunch.

Flight Attendant Education

With the current economic downturn affecting nearly every area of the economy there are a lot of people out of work and even people who have work considering other options in lieu of possible layoffs. Although you may not think it, the flight attendant training industry has seen an increase in registrants due to the scope of services they provide as well as the wide range of work a graduate can perform once their training is complete.
The International Air and Hospitality Academy in Vancouver, WA offers a wide variety of programs in fields such as Airline Reservations and Services, Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management as well as Flight Attendant School. Just as many other leading educational institutions, the International Air and Hospitality Academy offers a number of solutions for registrants including financial aid and scholarships in addition to other benefits such as housing programs and job placement opportunities. The AHA is also a fully accredited institution that offers registrants a receptive admissions office as well as detailed information regarding admission requirements as well as a detailed guide to getting started.
If you have been thinking about careers that provide job security as well as the ability to learn skills that are in demand across the board, a Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management or Flight Attendant Career through an education with AHA might just be what you are looking for. AHA can be contacted via the web, phone or by mail.

California and Massachusetts Bailout

Due to current economic woes, both California and Massachusetts have asked for government assistance in the form of a bailout. Both these states have been spending insane amounts of revenue on a wide variety of projects over the last few years and have found their treasuries barren due to the deluge of runaway spending.
Having spent quite a bit of time in Massachusetts over the years, I can say that there have been a massive array of highway and infrastructure projects over the last 20 years on an unparalleled level. If you have spent time inside the 128 Beltway, you understand that the infrastructure is crumbling and the narrow arteries need to be expanded to supplement the flow of services and workers in and out of the Boston Metro Area.
As for California, I haven't spent as much tome there as Massachusetts, but I do understand that the housing industry and the tech industry has suffered and that suffrage has spread into other industries and greater unemployment and runaway "safety net" spending.
Regardless, both states are seeking a government bailout similar to the package we saw past this last week. It will be interesting to see if other states follow suit and ask for a bailout as well. It is unclear what effect this may have on our nations economy, but it is unprecedented and oftentimes that isn't good.

Jensen K-Rail

Due to the current troubling economic times, many states all around the country are facing budget deficits that are spiraling out of control. In many instances these states have been forced to cut various projects and programs. The cuts have also been a drain on the local economy in regards to loss of jobs, lower wages and decreased revenue. Both Massachusetts and California have been the hardest hit. In fact both states have asked for government assistance in the form of a bailout just this week.
Fortunately, in both states, public safety and highway work has not been cutback due naturally to safety and transportation concerns. In regards to California, they have been quite fortunate due to increased availability of construction resources due to Jensen Precast. In order to reduce cost, Jensen Precast has been purchasing used k-rail and various types of barrier rail in order to continue their partnership as a supplier of construction resources to the state.
In addition to offering k-rail for highway work, Jensen Precast rents out their k-rail for a number of non-highway uses including security perimeters, sand and rock barriers as well as the formation of a temporary concrete barrier. California is facing a difficult situation due to the current crisis, but motorists, state highway workers and officials at least don't have to worry about any shortage of affordable k-rail.

FedEx Nacional Mexico

Although the global economic meltdown is affecting all nations and companies on the globe in different ways, there are some organizations that are doing quite well and expanding their services and business. FedEx recently announced that they will begin shipping domestic overnight freight to all 32 Mexican States under the banner of FedEx Nacional.
The service will be supported via two main hubs located in Toluca and San Luis Potosi. The San Luis Potosi center is expected to open fully in March of 2009.
Michael L Ducker, President International, FedEx Express, said: "Mexico continues to be one of the fastest-growing markets in the express industry and a key part of FedEx international growth and profitability."
The advance shipping market in Mexico is expected to grow by leaps and bounds in the next 10 years. In fact, currently the network is valued at about $822 Million whereas in 10 years it is estimated to reach $1.5 Billion.
FedEx has also announced that with the addition of the two complexes that they are expecting to add a number of new employees during the near future to supplement the facilities as well as for future expansion.

Global Markets Deteriorate

If there was ever any conversation that we were not in a global economic meltdown, that conversation should be thrown out the window. Over the last several days the United States economy has been in an incredible free fall, with the Dow Jones dropping below 10K for the first time in nearly 5 years. If the plummet of the Dow is any indicator of the financial ruin we may encounter in the near future, the shifting position of the global markets should be a succinct indicator all in themselves.
In early trading the United Kingdom's "Tootsie" dropped 5% just after the opening bell this morning. In addition, the Asian markets have also been in free fall for several days.
The man question is what can we as a society do to ensure a future of economic prosperity. It is becoming increasingly clear that throwing hyper-inflated currency at the problem is not the solution. Even though the influx of money may slow down the problem in the short term, the overall issue of inflated currency will likely come around to bite us in weeks or months as it has in the past.
The truth is that the bed is made and we all have to lie in it. Credit is frozen and doesn't look to thaw for anyone in this country deemed unacceptable (-700). The only advice I could recommend is to take care of your homes and vehicles the best you can because it might be difficult to get that loan to replace a furnace or automobile. I'm not too sure what we are in for, but it doesn't look good.

Chicago Midway Up For Privatization

With five runways and handling nearly 305,000 flights and 19 million passengers a year, Chicago's Midway Airport has been put up for privatization. In a $2.5 billion dollar deal, a consortium of firms including the Vancouver International Airport Authority, won the development contract of Chicago's Midway.
Being the first airport to be put up for privatization in the United States, sparks the question of whether it will be the last. If we take a look at the other small regional airports across the country who are struggling in this modern economic crisis, you have to wonder how many more may come up for "privatization".
It is strange to note that the consortium of firms who won the deal to privatize Midway Airport, defeated both Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, two firms at the center of the multi billion dollar Wall St. bailout deal. I find it intriguing that Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley were the leaders in this bid while the rest of the economy is faltering. Hey, isn't Sec. of The Treasury Henry Paulson a former Goldman Sachs guy?
The consortium has joined with John Hancock on a 99 year lease of the Chicago Midway grounds.

Melamine Poisoned Candy - In US for Halloween

utterli-image Over 2 weeks ago, I started talking about the Melamine baby formula poisoning scandal in China, thinking to myself, that it was a matter of time before this industrial poison was tracked to products in the United States. Unfortunately that time is today. Melamine has been found through tests in candy in Connecticut less than 1 month before Halloween.
" The discovery announced Wednesday involved the White Rabbit Creamy Candy brand, which is sold in 50 countries but has already been recalled from stores in Britain and many Asian countries. Jerry Farrell Jr., Connecticut’s consumer protection commissioner, announced that contaminated candy had been found at two stores in New Haven, one in West Hartford and one in East Haven. In each case, tests found traces of an industrial additive, melamine, in the candy. “We’re concerned, obviously, there may have been bags sold of these before we got to them,” Mr. Farrell said on Wednesday, according to The Associated Press. Last month, the Food and Drug Administration warned consumers about White Rabbit candy because of concerns over possible melamine contamination. In California, health officials have found traces of melamine after testing samples of White Rabbit candy. The American distributor has ordered a recall, but some of the candy may still be in stores."
http://www.nytimes.com/…2milk.html In 2007 White Rabbit Candy was recalled in the Phillipines when formaldehyde was found in the product. For US consumers this may not be mainstream candy, consumed by everyone. It does represent a weakness in US oversight of food products shipped to the United States from China, and is likely the tip of the ice berg that has already landed on shore. We need to get a better handle on this problem before this problem is discovered everywhere from dry food stuffs on the shelves at grocery stores to ingredients used in Christmas dinner recipes. South East Gas Shortage

The Southeastern United States has been gripped by a severe gasoline shortage that has all but ground commerce to a halt. The shortage began nearly two and a half weeks ago as Hurricane Ike battered East Texas and the refineries located in Houston. After the storm cleared out and waters receded, southern states were told that production would increase shortly and that reserves would be able to meet demand.
At first, shortly was supposed to mean 2 to 3 days tops, but quickly stretched to a week, 2 weeks and now until mid-October. It wouldn't be too unreasonable to suggest that demand will not be able to be satisfied until Election Day.
Not only is this calamity affecting just the southeastern quadrant of the United States, nearby regions will begin feeling the ripple effect as their supplies are tapped to help the southeast. This crisis isn't earning much attention on a national level due to presidential politics, and economy in crisis and the recovery effort along the East Texas coast.
Residents and businesses alike are left to fend for themselves at this point and patience is hovering just above "EMPTY".

Quality Scrubs And More

Having a wife that works in the healthcare field, I am quite familiar with the wide variety of nursing uniforms and medical scrubs that healthcare professionals are required to purchase in order to work on site in both hospitals and clinics. I am also familiar with the difficulty of finding a good selection of quality scrubs and have oftentimes heard horror stories of having to use "leftovers" at the hospital that are too large or small. Lets face it, if you work in the healthcare industry, your focus shouldn't have to be on locating scrubs.
Fortunately, there is hope for those in the industry and those who may be entering in the near future. Scrubs and Beyond, a leader in the medical clothing industry has not only a wide variety of quality scrubs, but provides a number of other great products for students and professionals alike. Whether you are looking for dickies scrubs, nursing shoes or stethoscopes, Scrubs and Beyond has all your bases covered. In fact, they also offer a wide variety of peaches scrubs as well as barco metro scrubs.
In addition to offering healthcare professionals a wide variety of quality clothing and tools, Scrubs and Beyond is a proud supporter of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you are in the market for quality affordable scrubs, give Scrubs and Beyond a look and help them support Breast Cancer Awareness.

The Dow Plummets Then Rebounds Many Losers Than Just Wall St.

With the current instability in the United States economy and the economic crisis wave spreading across the ocean to the other major world markets, no industry is immune. This morning, the Japanese markets were effected due to fears that Americans would be unable to purchase products by Sony, Toyota and Honda. All three of Japans largest exports saw their values decline.
Worldwide, distributors are seeing their costs increase and business slow down predicated on the fears from investors across the world who are "in bed" with the United States economy. Granted, almost every major index was down yesterday and rallied modestly today, but the instability means anything but business as usual.
It will be interesting to see how these factors play out tomorrow. Asian markets will open in about 5-6 hours, will they recover similarly as Wall St. did this afternoon all but erasing a 777 point drop? This worldwide financial crisis is on the verge of bubbling over and scalding everyone.

Rent To Own

Due to the current economic crisis, many Americans are having difficulty affording many of our day-to-day necessities as well as luxury goods. Today the stock market fell an additional 500 points on the news that an economic "bailout" bill was rejected in congress! This economic meltdown will likely influence Capitol Hill lawmakers and the average person to reexamine the rent to own industry.
As of the moment, many people don't understand the industry and oftentimes question what is rent to own; what does it mean? The concept of rent to own is actually quite simple and the growing benefits in this economic uncertainty is overwhelming. Basically, a consumer finds a product that they wish to own and agree on a rent to own contract that explains the terms of the deal. The terms can vary, but the principle is quite simple. A common misconception is that rent to own is a credit transaction, simply put, it isn't. In fact, there are no interest charges and the consumer benefits by not being subjected to a credit check and can return the "rented" item at any point with no-hassle.
There are many consumer products offered via the rent to own industry. Whether you are looking for furniture, electronics, musical instruments, jewelry or whatever, you are likely to find it in one of nearly 8,500 stores across North America.
There is no doubt that this current economic downturn will send consumers scrambling to find solutions in this credit-shortened environment. Consumers will be looking for better ways to purchase goods and services. It appears that the rent to own industry will benefit greatly due to their flexibility and hassle-free contract agreements.

Alternative Options For Distributors

Due to the current economic instability as well as increasing fuel prices, many regional distributors are being passed over for the larger global suppliers. Oftentimes, the smaller regional distribution services are passed over due to lack of shipping lanes as well as flexibility (in terms of rates and times). Not only do larger suppliers have the advantage of greater influence and reach, but can oftentimes outbid the smaller outfits due to the aforementioned circumstances.
Recently, due to increased operating costs, smaller distributors have been able to make a comeback due to not only lesser expenses, but the ability to offer more personalized service and less stringent operating procedures. Unfortunately it is difficult for the smaller organizations to make a continued push as fuel prices and insurance costs skyrocket.
There are many challenges that face distributors of all shapes and sizes in this economy, so it is up to the owners and CEO's to work in a manner that continues sound business principles as well as a continued onus on service and customizability for consumers.

Customers Who Aren't Getting Railed

With the current economic upheaval many industries who have been feeling the pinch have begun a series of predatory pricing campaigns, but not the Canadian National Railroad Company. In fact, CFO Claude Mongeau was quoted as saying, "I don't see things changing. They might be slowing a little bit in a tougher economic environment, but I don't see things going back to the old days.
Mongeau went on to say, "We have years in front of us in which railroads should hopefully be able to price in line with inflation and then some, to the extent that they add value to the supply chain of their customers."
In these tough economic times, it is good to see sanity and a certain distancing from corporate greed. Currently rail is still used predominantly in the steel and fabrications industries as well as timber and building supplies in the Northwest. It will be interesting to see just how far many businesses are willing to go to help out their customers and clients in these difficult financial times.

Economic Upheavals Possible Effects On Trucking Sector

The American Truckers Association has crept their way into the middle of the Wall St. crisis by insisting that the United States government take a more proactive role in solving the current upheaval.
