TJX Card Heist

TJX Cos. has released a regulatory filing describing in detail the extent of the credit and debit card thefts that were perpetrated earlier this year. It turns out that the thefts were much more widespread than initially thought. Over 45.7 million credit cards and debit cards were "stolen" over the previous 18 months. Some of the data which was stolen can be traced all the way back to 2002.

TJX spokeswoman Sherry Lang tried to assure customers that the majority of the data was corrupted so instead of actual credit card numbers being stolen; the majority was encoded with asterisks. Being dubbed as the biggest credit card heist ever, TJX Cos. will have its work cut out for them reassuring customers of their safety in their stores.
