Truck Tonnage Rates Worst Since Last Recession

ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello stated in a press release that he had tracked November 2006 Truck tonnage for for-hire transportation and had identified a decrease of year over year rates contracting by 8.8 percent.  This contraction marked the worst single month contraction since the last recession.

Year to Year comparisons of monthly figures are difficult to compare however the decrease from October 06 to November 06 and the Year to Year decreases both provide potentially troubling mile markers regarding the over all health of the economy.

Costello indicated in Logistics Management that if the decline trend were to continue into 2007 then overall expectations for 2007 performance could be weaker especially for the first half of the year.
